Executive Director

Status: 40 hrs/week, Full Time Exempt
Reports to: Beyond Toxics Board of Directors
Location: Eugene, Oregon
Salary Range: The expected base salary range is $95,000 to $120,000. Salary commensurate with experience.

About Beyond Toxics
Beyond Toxics is a community-driven environmental justice organization committed to creating a healthy, just, and sustainable Oregon. Established in 2001, we are a multicultural, inter-generational team dedicated to advancing environmental, climate, and racial justice. Our mission focuses on eliminating toxic pollution, promoting climate resilience, and advocating for the well-being of marginalized communities across the state. Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrator and strategist for Beyond Toxics, responsible for overall management, policy implementation, and advancing the organization’s mission. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will maintain transparent communication, develop organizational sustainability and provide visionary leadership. This role requires strong expertise in advocacy, nonprofit management, community engagement, and fostering diverse partnerships.

Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership and Administration

  • Lead the strategic direction and program implementation in alignment with Beyond Toxics’ mission, values, and long-term goals.

  • Act as the chief spokesperson, representing the organization publicly and building strategic alliances with other nonprofits, community leaders, government agencies, and tribal partners.

  • Champion the organization’s efforts to center frontline and marginalized communities, ensuring meaningful participation and resource allocation for all affected stakeholders.

2. Organizational Management

  • Oversee daily operations, ensuring policy adherence, performance standards and long-term sustainability.

  • Develop and implement new organizational policies and programs, reporting regularly to the Board.

  • Foster an inclusive, equitable and collaborative work environment that supports staff diversity, well-being and leadership development through formal training and ongoing mentorship.

  • Strengthen volunteer engagement by cultivating and expanding volunteer leadership capabilities.

3. Financial Oversight and Compliance

  • Lead diverse fundraising efforts, engaging with major donors, foundations, and other sponsors.

  • Oversee the annual budget, in collaboration with the Board Treasurer, to ensure financial health and responsible resource allocation.

  • Ensure financial transparency, facilitate periodic audits, and oversee best financial practices in adherence to nonprofit management standards.

4. Board Development and Governance

  • Maintain open, transparent communication with the Board of Directors, updating them on organizational progress, needs, and challenges.

  • Assist in recruiting, cultivating, and engaging Board members passionate about environmental and racial justice.

  • Recommend policies and programs for Board approval and ensure effective implementation.

5. Advocacy and Program Implementation

  • Advocate for environmental and climate justice issues specific to Oregon while exploring the potential for national impact.

  • Oversee community education campaigns that engage the community and build awareness about critical environmental health, climate, and social justice issues.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a broad network of stakeholders, including nonprofits, government agencies, tribal organizations, and community leaders, to further Beyond Toxics’ strategic initiatives.

6. Additional Duties

  • Execute other responsibilities as requested by the Board of Directors, contributing to organizational development and growth.

  • Ensure Beyond Toxics work remains relevant and responsive to community needs especially in the realms of climate resilience and environmental justice.

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and strategic planning skills, with attention to detail.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with experience in public speaking and stakeholder engagement.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with government agencies, tribal organizations, community leaders, and the public.

  • Expertise in policy and legal advocacy at the State legislative level, with a preference for experience in Oregon’s legislative process.

  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and securing funding from diverse sources.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace apps (Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.)

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent expertise, in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, or a related field; Master’s degree is preferred.

  • At least 5 years of experience in a nonprofit leadership supervisory role, preferably within environmental justice or advocacy organizations.

  • Experience with legislative advocacy, policy development and donor relations is essential.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting (or standing) at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion.

Grant Writer

Status: 40 hrs/week, Full Time Exempt

Position Overview
The grant writer is responsible for securing funding through grants to support the Beyond Toxic's mission and projects.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Research and identify grant opportunities that align with the organization's environmental justice advocacy goals.

  • Write compelling grant proposals, including letters of inquiry, narratives, and supporting documents.

  • Collaborate with organizational leadership and program staff to gather information and develop project concepts.

  • Manage the grant application process, including deadlines, submissions, and follow-ups.

  • Maintain relationships with funders and serve as a liaison to funding agencies.

  • Track and report on grant performance, including budget management and outcome reporting.

  • Share grant narratives, write up commitments and disbursement status with staff.

  • Track grants types and provide expenditure reports for funders and/or bookkeepers as required.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May develop and maintain a grant management system. Prefer experience with GrantSeeker or equivalent software.

  • Contribute to overall fundraising strategies and institutional giving pipelines.

  • Assist with other development-related writing tasks, such as annual reports or appeal letters in collaboration with the communications team.

  • Occasional weekend and after-hours work required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, environmental science, or a related field.

  • Evidence of strong writing and editing skills with the ability to craft persuasive narratives.

  • Excellent research and analytical abilities.

  • Proficiency in project management and meeting deadlines.

  • Knowledge of environmental issues and current trends in philanthropy.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Prefer 5 years of grant writing or similar experience.

Environmental Justice Youth Education Coordinator

Position Overview
The Youth Education Coordinator works to educate youth to advocate for environmental and climate justice and resiliency (ECJ), civic engagement, decarbonization/fossil fuel reductions and green energy, air quality and environmental protections and economic justice. 

The position reports to the Beyond Toxics Executive Director and works closely with staff to create leadership development programs and learning content in support of climate justice projects and policies that advance racial justice and a Just Transition within Oregon. 

The Youth Education Coordinator will serve community members throughout Oregon, with a special focus on youth in Lane County who are impacted by climate change, environmental injustices, environmental degradation and economic disparities.

The Youth Education Coordinator will work with communities to develop and implement education projects to empower communities based on the principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Working closely with educators and coalition partners, the Educator will elevate the social and environmental impacts of climate policy and champion informed decision-making to the general public, elected leaders, decision-makers and other institutions that make climate policies. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Design and implement various curricula, projects, and workshops related to climate resilience, trauma-informed practices, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies and public education.

  • Prepare and distribute educational materials in the community to improve understanding and bridge resource gaps.

  • Serve as project manager for Rise as Leaders and continue to build on the success of our Rise as Leaders youth leadership program, developing bi-annual cohorts of environmental justice youth advocates in the local community.

  • Support team members plan and participate in organizational events and community organizing to protect public health through advocacy for a healthy climate, clean air, land and water; serve on staff teams such as the Air Quality Team, the Environmental Justice Team, etc.

  • Support outreach to and relationship building with BIPOC partners and community members on youth education opportunities related to environmental health and climate equity projects.   

  • Stay informed and up-to-date on climate policies, energy policies, toxics reduction and waste management and other regulations that affect climate outcomes.

  • Create and/or participate in community activities that heighten the awareness of the role the environment has in health outcomes and disease prevention, including coalition meetings, membership meetings, working group meetings, Earth Day celebrations, other celebrations, community conversations, and demonstrations.

  • Employ community organizing tools and tactics, including but not limited to door knocking, phone banking, surveys, 1 on 1s, forums and town hall meetings, work groups, testimony at public meetings, and strategic collaboration with other environmental justice organizations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work as a respectful and engaged team member with Beyond Toxics staff, board and advisors.

  • Attend staff meetings, carry out team assignments, and participate in organizational meetings and outreach events as necessary and as requested. Contribute to office cleanliness and organization.

  • Speak in public and educational settings representing and advocating for Beyond Toxics on climate and environmental justice policies and issues (which might include related issues impacting health, air, water, and land).

  • Contribute content for reports, newsletters, social media, and other communications.

  • Provide written and oral communication: i.e., writing letters, giving presentations, creating fliers, drafting agendas, writing and giving testimony, calling elected/appointed officials.

  • After hours and weekend work required

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Must be willing to to register for Oregon Central Registry background check.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience

  • Written and oral Spanish language fluency preferred

  • Strong Interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated collaboration skills

  • Flexible and dependable

  • Experience working with diverse youth populations preferred

  • 1-2 years experience with curriculum development, youth organizing, youth supervision, designing art projects, youth advocacy, and or youth mentoring

  • Proficient in Google Workplace and Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel within west Lane County
