Beyond Toxics challenges environmental pollution by taking on its root causes – environmental racism and injustice – and activating and organizing the people who are most affected by pollution and harm.
How We Do Our Work
[divider line_type="Small Line" line_thickness="8" divider_color="default" animate="yes" custom_height="100" custom_line_width="120"]Beyond Toxics works to advance the power of Oregon’s most vulnerable and marginalized groups who are exposed to a disproportionate share of environmental health burdens. Our organization was founded in 2000 as a diverse coalition of working class, rural and industrialized communities seeking to end a pattern of exposure to pollution.
We do this work side-by-side with the frontline communities that suffer the brunt of environmental harm. We change policy by demanding that their experiences and knowledge play a central role in environmental policy decisions.
What Is Environmental Justice?
[divider line_type="Small Line" line_thickness="8" divider_color="default" animate="yes" custom_height="100" custom_line_width="120"]Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of people of color and vulnerable communities who experience disproportionate levels of toxicity in their communities. Environmental justice requires self-determination for economic, social, and political capital to create communities that thrive.
